Massage has been in use for thousands of years. In ancient times, the Olympians used massage to warm up prior to
an event and to relax muscles after the game much in the same way sports trainers do for their athletes today. Hippocrates once said
,"friction applied to a loose joint will tighten it and loosen a tight joint"!
Today, we know muscles only pull. So, when you work out and do a lot of repetitions, or just your every day routine,
your muscles
fatigues. Chemicals build up from your metabolism and these muscles feel sore and stiff. Massage
looses the
toxins (chemicals), helps the muscle relax and get ready to
work again. Massage is a form of passive exercise.
The August issue of Consumers Report this year (2005) did a study of the effects and popularity of complimentary health practices such as
chiropractic, massage, acupressure / acupuncture, reflexology and physical therapy. The responses placed
chiropractic in the lead for helping people feel better with
problems in their neck and backs. Massage was number two to help neck and back pain, but first for helping people with fibromyalgia and
osteoarthritis.
More people are turning to alternative health practices to add to their health maintenance programs of :exercise, good nutrition, stress
reduction i.e.:,
doing less by taking time to rest and attend to spiritual matters, plenty of sleep, social interaction with family and friends and balancing
work with play.
Massage aids in prevention of illness by strengthening the mind, body and spirit!!!
